Jonny Adam will attempt to claim a record-extending fifth British GT Championship title with Aston Martin this year after linking up with Giacomo Petrobelli in Blackthorn’s second new Vantage GT3.
His four previous titles were achieved with the previous two iterations of the Vantage, while the DBRS9 also features amongst his 19 outright wins.
‘Mr British GT’ hasn’t campaigned an Aston full-time domestically since 2021 when he returned to Beechdean AMR. Instead, he has raced a 2 Seas Mercedes-AMG – first and sporadically with Flick Haigh before mounting a title tilt with James Cottingham last year.
But Cottingham’s FIA WEC move left Adam with the opportunity to race for the manufacturer he’s officially represented since 2012.
“I’m stoked to be back on the grid in the British GT Championship again, with Blackthorn AMR,” he said. “I have worked with Giacomo in the past and I think with the new Aston Martin GT3 and the Blackthorn team behind us we can certainly challenge for race wins and put up a good fight in the championship. The new Aston Martin Vantage GT3 has been really enjoyable to drive in all of the development testing and I can’t wait for round one now at Oulton Park.”
He’ll be there alongside Petrobelli, an experienced Am – his first outing with SRO came in the 2010 FIA GT3 European Championship – but one with just two previous British GT appearances to his name. They were also with Aston Martin, and specifically TF Sport, at Silverstone in 2020 and ’21.
“I am really looking forward to being back in British GT with Aston Martin and Blackthorn, and to have Jonny as a team-mate,” added the Italian. “It looks like the championship has become even more competitive since I last drove in it, with lots of fast Ams and factory drivers, but we are hoping to be fighting at the front.”
Blackthorn’s other new Aston Martin, which features Silver-Am crew Matt Topham and Josh Rowledge, was revealed yesterday. The differences between the two liveries are subtle: aside from some branding on the sides (including Topham’s ‘Skully’), there are the fluro flashes on the windscreen banners and wing mirrors.
British GT’s full-season entry list will be officially revealed at media day next Tuesday before Oulton Park stages the season opener on March 30 + April 1.
