McLaren Sports Series set for second season as official British GT Safety Car

British GT is delighted to announce an extension to its official Safety Car partnership with McLaren Automotive.

2016 saw the British manufacturer’s then all-new 570S take care of on-track safety and co-ordination, and while that model is again expected to make appearances throughout the year McLaren will also use its official partnership to showcase a number of its other Sports Series models.

That rolling roster begins this Easter weekend at Oulton Park where the brand new 540C Coupé (pictured) will lead the 30-car field at the start of Monday’s two hour-long races, both of which are live on Front Runner TV.

Packing a 3.8-litre V8 engine and 533bhp, The 540C Coupé certainly has the speed to keep a pack of GT3 and GT4 cars in check, while its lightweight carbon fibre chassis also ensures it’s up to the task through the corners.

The Safety Car role is truly fitting for a McLaren. As with every model produced for road or track since 1981, safety is a key attribute with a carbon fibre chassis at the heart of each Sports Series model. The 540C Coupé, 570S Coupé, 570GT and the 570S GT4 share the lightweight MonoCell II, providing the highest levels of occupant safety.

The 540C Sports Series Safety Car will be the seventh different McLaren on Oulton’s grid, with six 570Ss entered in the GT4 class.

“It’s great to have McLaren back for a second season as British GT’s official Safety Car partner, and especially so given the number of 570S GT4s we have entered,” said championship manager Benjamin Franassovici. “It’s fitting that one of Britain’s premier sportscar manufacturers with so much British GT history should renew its partnership in this, our 25th anniversary campaign.”
