British GT will join the rest of UK motorsport by doing its bit to support Billy Monger’s recovery at Rockingham this weekend.
The 17-year-old sustained serious injuries and a double lower leg amputation in a Formula 4 accident at Donington Park on April 16, which has resulted in an outpouring of support from around the world. Two weeks on and British GT has an ideal opportunity to make its own contribution when the championship stages its third round of the season.
#BillyWhizz has proven an effective method of promoting Monger’s Just Giving campaign across social media. That hashtag and Monger’s crash helmet design will now adorn all 30 cars’ windscreen banners, which are usually reserved for British GT branding. GT3 entries will feature black text on a light union flag background, while a dark union flag and white text will denote GT4 cars.
This is the most prominent area available to the championship’s organisers, and will be especially noticeable when the two-hour race is broadcast live across the UK on Front Runner TV this Sunday afternoon.
Deckle Edge has also been busy printing and supplying #BillyWhizz stickers to the motorsport community since Monger’s accident, and its products will be available for all drivers to use - in return for a donation - at Rockingham this weekend.
Fans are also being asked to do their bit during Sunday’s free British GT pitwalk and driver autograph session when they’ll be offered the chance to make a voluntary £1 donation. All proceeds from the championship’s ‘Pound for a Pitwalk’, which starts at 12:20, will go towards Monger’s recovery.
“British GT was at Oulton Park the same weekend as Billy sustained his injuries and it was clear how much the accident affected those in the paddock,” said championship manager Benjamin Franassovici. “We have a lot of drivers Billy’s age and younger competing with us and in the support categories, so although we don’t know him personally there is a connection. As part of the UK motorsport community we also feel compelled to help. Offering our most prominent advertising space seems like a good way to do that.
