Audi factory squad WRT enters British's Spa round

European GT racing heavyweight Team WRT will conpete in British GT's Spa-Francorchamps this weekend after confirming a single Audi R8 LMS GT3 entry for Alain Ferte and Stuart Leonard.

The multiple Blancpain GT Series championship-winning squad is using the outing as a further opportunity to gather data ahead of the Total 24 Hours of Spa later this month.

Leonard competes with WRT in the Blancpajn GT Series and currently lies fifth in the overall standings after six of this year’s 10 rounds. His one previous British GT appearance also came at Spa in 2015 when he and then co-driver Michael Meadows finished third at the wheel of an Aston Martin.

Meanwhile, former French F3 and Formula Renault champion Ferte has enjoyed a long and eclectic career, which has included spells in the DTM, World SportsCar Championship, BPR, FIA GT1 and Super GT. The 61-year-old Frenchman is contesting this year’s GT4 European Series Southern Cup and V de V prototype championship, which he won in 2016.

This weekend’s British GT round won’t be the first time that Leonard and Ferte have raced one of WRT’s Audis together. The pair, along with Meadows and Laurens Vanthoor, won 2016’s Dubai 24 Hours driving one of the Belgian squad’s R8 LMS GT3s.

WRT’s inclusion brings the number of confirmed additional GT3 entries for this weekend’s Spa round to three following last week’s news that Kessel Racing and Barwell Motorsport would be running a Ferrari and additional Lamborghini, respectively.

British GT’s complete Spa entry list will be revealed later today.
