Academy forced to make late McLaren switch for Spa

> ERC Sport’s Mercedes-AMG GT4 withdrawn
> Updated provisional entry list: Spa-Francorchamps

Academy Motorsport’s #61 entry has switched to a McLaren for this weekend’s British GT round at Spa-Francorchamps after one of its two Aston Martins sustained significant damage at Zandvoort.

The same chassis used by Micah Stanley and Ben Hurst in this year’s British GT campaign was involved in a startline accident during the latest GT4 European Series round last weekend. And the short turnaround time between the two events has made it impossible for Academy to repair the car in time.

Instead of withdrawing from Spa, the team has opted to switch to the McLaren 570S with which it contested the Bahrain GT Festival late last year. It’s the same chassis Equipe Verschuur used throughout 2018 when Finlay Hutchison and Dan Mckay claimed class victory at Donington and another podium at Spa.

Eight McLarens – the most of any GT4 manufacturer – are therefore entered this weekend, while Aston Martin’s total, which includes Academy’s #62 entry shared by Alex Toth-Jones and Will Moore, has reduced to six.

Elsewhere, Spa’s entry list now totals 40 cars after ERC Sport withdrew its Mercedes-AMG GT4. Peter Belshaw and Maxi Buhk were expected to reprise the partnership that finished second at Silverstone earlier this year.

British GT’s annual outing at Spa will be shown live for the first time ever this Sunday. Watch the two-hour enduro live on the championship’s website and social media accounts, plus SRO’s GT World Youtube channel, at 11:30 BST.
