Ross Gunn and Yelmer Buurman finished neck-and-neck in the final free practice session at Spa, with Beechdean’s Aston Martin and RAM Racing’s Mercedes-AMG producing identical times during a sodden session. Scott McKenna kept Toyota Gazoo Racing top in GT4, proving that car’s pace come rain or shine.
GT3
Ross Gunn and Yelmer Buurman starred during a rain-afflicted second free practice session at Spa, with title contenders Beechdean AMR and RAM Racing sharing the honours of being fastest ahead of qualifying.
Persistent rain proved troublesome during the session, with track conditions constantly changing. Buurman set the early pace before being swiftly demoted by first Scott Malvern in Team Parker Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 R, and then Dennis Lind in Barwell’s #63 Lamborghini Huracan. Then Phil Keen took a turn, lifting the WPI Lamborghini he shares with Michael Igoe to the top of the times.
Things looked set before a short break in the rain allowed Gunn to capitalise and set an impressive 2m39.075sec lap. Nobody looked like equalling that, until Buurman went back out for one final blast and matched the Aston to the thousandth, which was fitting given the two cars are also tied on points at the head of the championship heading into this weekend.
The session was ended early after Malvern suffered a crash at Raidillon in the closing minutes, bringing out the red flags.
Machitski/Lind finished third fastest, ahead of Igoe/Keen, and the Malvern/Nick Jones Porsche. Adam Balon/Sandy Mitchell were sixth fastest in Barwell’s #1 Lamborghini. Mia Flewitt/Euan Hankey were seventh in the RJN McLaren GT3, ahead of Lewis and Stuart Proctor’s Balfe McLaren.
GT4
Scott McKenna kept up his impressive form in Belgium to keep the Toyota Gazoo Racing Toyota Supra top of the timesheets, producing a string of impressive laps to see of his rivals.
When the first flying laps came in, McKenna managed to hold off Will Burns’ Century Motorsport BMW by just 0.009sec, with Matt Cowley’s Academy Ford Mustang and Charlie Robertson’s Assetto Motorsport Ginetta in close attendance.
As the session wore on, McKenna gradually chipped away at the benchmark until he eventually enjoyed a 1.6sec gap back to the Burns/Burton BMW. Andrew Gordon-Colebrooke/Chris Salkeld finished the session third fastest, but also behind the barriers with damage.
Matt Topham/Darren Turner were fourth in Newbridge Motorsport’s Aston Martin Vantage, with Richard Williams and Sennan Fielding’s Steller Motorsport Audi fifth ahead of Mark Sansom/Robertson’s Ginetta.
