WPI confirms unchanged line-up for 2022 British GT campaign

2021 title contenders WPI Motorsport are returning to the Intelligent Money British GT Championship next season with an unchanged driver line-up.

Michael Igoe and Phil Keen were the only multiple GT3 winners this year en route to fourth in the drivers’ standings. Now the duo team up for a second season aboard WPI’s Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo, which first contested the series in 2019.

Those two victories extended Keen’s existing GT3/overall wins record to 19, although the 38-year-old once again missed out on the crown despite heading to the final round as a title contender for the sixth time in as many seasons.

“It’s about time we changed that statistic, don’t you think?!” he said. “There were occasions this year, like Brands Hatch, where we had the measure of everyone, but others – and especially during the mid-season slump with the mystery handling issue – when we were nowhere.

“It was a real Jekyll and Hyde campaign that proved consistency wins British GT titles rather than occasional strong showings. Still, the team definitely took a step forwards compared with 2019 and ’20. Now we have to find those extra percentage points that make the difference come season’s end.”

Igoe also feels his personal level increased as a result of working with Keen throughout 2021 – his first British GT season with a single co-driver.

“Phil’s one of the fastest guys out there but he also understands championships are usually won and lost by the amateur, whoever they’re racing for,” he said. “I learnt a lot and improved as a driver thanks to having some consistency, as well as a driver of his calibre, on the other side of the garage throughout the year. Ok, we didn’t win the title, but just being in contention at Donington after the issues we had earlier in the season was an achievement in itself. It was a no brainer to continue together and build on everything we’ve learnt throughout 2021.”

Oulton Park hosts the opening round of 2022’s British GT campaign on April 16 & 18.
