Reigning Pro-Am champions Matt Topham and Darren Turner are returning to the Intelligent Money British GT4 ranks with Newbridge Motorsport this season.
Last year’s performances suggest the Aston Martin duo will be amongst the favourites to lift GT4’s overall crown, a feat last achieved by a Pro-Am crew in 2016.
Topham and Turner won together first time out at Silverstone in June before adding a second victory to their tally at Oulton Park. They also finished fourth in the overall standings despite missing Brands Hatch’s season opener and scoring in just five of the eight races Newbridge contested.
Little wonder, then, that it’s consistency rather than outright speed that Topham is chasing this year.
“Racing in British GT had been a dream of mine and 2021 didn’t disappoint – I was surprised how well Darren and I worked as a team last year and the results we achieved, including winning on our debut,” he said. “Now, with experience and results, the expectation and pressure ratchets up a few notches.
“I believe we have the pace to beat the silver crews over a season but that relies on us maximising every weekend, sometimes banking solid points rather than worrying about
podiums and wins. With a bit more consistency I have no doubt we can be overall contenders this year. That’s certainly the aim, anyway.”
As well as Brands Hatch, Turner also missed British GT’s visit to Donington Park last July. However, a confirmed full-season programme offers the Aston Martin Racing factory driver an opportunity to add another title to his illustrious CV.
“I’m really looking forward to joining Matt and Newbridge again for a full season in British GT,” said the three-time Le Mans class winner. “It was a nice surprise to win the Pro-Am Championship last year considering Matt’s experience but he had an incredible year and the team delivered a winning car. So now let’s see what we can do in 2022.”
This year’s Intelligent Money British GT Championship begins at Oulton Park on April 16 & 18.
