> First of team’s two new Lambos confirmed
Mark Sansom and Will Tregurtha are switching to Barwell Motorsport for next season’s Intelligent Money British GT Championship campaign.
The Silver-Am duo moves from Assetto’s Bentley to the perennial title contender’s new Black Bull-backed Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2, which debuts in 2023.
A second new car will also join Barwell’s stable of Raging Bulls, although its line-up won’t be announced until next year.
For now the focus is very much on Sansom and former GT4 champion Tregurtha who made their British GT3 class debuts this season. The duo scored a Silver-Am victory at Oulton Park and remained in class title contention until their final appearance of a curtailed campaign at Spa.
But their switch to Barwell, which finished second in last year’s drivers’ standings after winning the title in 2020 and ’21, represents a statement of intent from Sansom who made his first GT4 appearance only two years ago.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to race with Barwell in the new Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2,” he said. “Barwell have unsurpassed championship pedigree and I’ve been hugely impressed with what I’ve seen of how they operate. I’m also delighted to continue my partnership with Will Tregurtha. He’s outstandingly quick and we worked well together last season, so we’re excited to see what we can do together with Barwell next year.”
2017 GT4 champion Tregurtha, meanwhile, is looking forward to fighting at the front with Lamborghini’s latest GT3 weapon.
“I'm ecstatic to be racing with Barwell in the upcoming British GT season. The team has a proven track record of consistent wins and championships – this is hugely exciting for me, and I know as a pair, Mark Sansom and I can fly. We gelled well last year and it's an absolute pleasure to race with him. Bring on 2023!”
Moving back to a two-car operation will also allow Barwell to fight for the teams’ championship once again after fielding just a single entry throughout 2022.
“Barwell will be back up to full strength with a two-car attack in British GT once again next season, with a pair of fabulous-looking new Huracan EVO2s,” said team principal Mark Lemmer. “We are delighted to announce the first of our two entries, welcoming on board the hugely talented Will Tregurtha alongside very rapid Am driver, Mark Sansom. We have been following their progress for a while now and we are confident that they will be up the front and challenging for overall podiums right from the word go.”
