FP2: Adam leads GT3 while George tops GT4 at Silverstone

A late lap from championship leader Jonny Adam helped TF Sport lead second practice ahead of this afternoon’s Silverstone 500 qualifying session. And it was a similar story in GT4 where Matthew George’s Generation AMR SuperRacing Aston Martin topped the class times.

Adam’s final flying lap, set in the closing moments of FP2, was not only fastest of the session but also quicker than this morning’s benchmark. The Scot, who shares his Aston Martin with Derek Johnston, posted a 2m01.330s to end the 50-minute session 0.362s faster than Callum MacLeod’s Team Parker Racing Bentley Continental GT3, which is making a one-off British GT appearance this weekend. It was also six tenths up on Alexander Sims’ FP1 best.

Phil Keen again underlined Barwell and Lamborghini’s pace by posting the third quickest time. But that was in stark contrast to the sister Huracan that had topped the earlier running before spending most of FP2 in the garage after Liam Griffin was side-swiped by a GT4 European Series BMW.

After a low-key first practice outing Rob Bell suggested the Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse McLaren 650S could be a contender in qualifying by lapping 0.571s shy of Adam en route to fourth, one place but four tenths quicker than Joe Osborne’s AmDTuning.com BMW Z4 GT3.

FF Corse continued to work on their new Ferrari 488’s balance but still found time for Adam Carroll to post the sixth quickest time ahead of Beechdean AMR’s Ross Gunn and the second Team Parker Bentley driven by Seb Morris.

Generation AMR and Aston Martin’s GT4 stranglehold continued in FP2, although it was the SuperRacing-entered Vantage that came out on top this time around. Just five minutes remained when George jumped to the top courtesy of a 2m13.603s lap, which would remain unbeaten over the closing stages.

That was exactly a tenth down on Matty Graham’s morning best but still 0.4s quicker than Sandy Mitchell and Ciaran Haggerty could muster aboard the Black Bull Ecurie Ecosse McLaren 570S, which ended up second quickest in class. JWBird Motorsport’s Jake Giddings had been top halfway through the session before slipping to third, while Beechdean AMR’s Jordan Albert and Jack Bartholomew made it three V8 Vantages in the top four British GT entries.

Lanan Racing’s Alex Reed and Joey Foster were next up in the first of the Ginettas, albeit a second down on George’s leading time but ahead of Marcus Hoggarth and Abbie Eaton’s Ebor GT Maserati and the championship-leading PMW Expo Racing/Optimum Motorsport G55 driven by Mike Robinson. Morning pace-setters Matty Graham and Jack Mitchell completed the British GT top-eight.

Once again British GT entries dominated the top of the class standings with only two GT4 European Series cars finishing inside the top-10.

Qualifying for tomorrow’s Silverstone 500 takes place at 15:40 this afternoon.
