TF Sport return to the Intelligent Money British GT3 ranks at Silverstone next weekend when reigning GT4 champion Tom Canning teams up with Giacomo Petrobelli aboard an Aston Martin Vantage.
Canning was set to graduate to the series’ senior ranks at the start of 2020 before the global pandemic put paid to his and Graham Davidson’s plans. Now, seven months later than planned, the 18-year-old finally gets his chance to take on the UK’s established GT3 order.
However, Silverstone won’t be Canning’s first competitive outing in GT3 machinery. That came at Spa-Francorchamps earlier this month when he and Ahmad Al Harthy claimed GT Open Pro-Am honours on debut.
“I’m really excited to be back racing at the Silverstone 500 for my British GT return, this time in GT3,” said Canning, whose Aston will again run in the Pro-Am class. “Now I have completed my first race weekend with TF Sport in GT3 and won my first race in the class, I am very confident going into the weekend racing alongside Giacomo in the TF Sport-prepared Vantage!”
Petrobelli, meanwhile, makes his GT racing return following a six-year hiatus. The Italian switches to Aston Martin machinery after several successful seasons spent racing a Ferrari 458 in GT World Challenge Europe’s forerunner, the Blancpain Endurance Series.
“Having been out of a race car for a while, I am really looking forward to driving the Aston at the most prestigious race in the British GT calendar,” he said. “I have known Tom Ferrier and TF Sport for a long time and I am confident the car will be well prepared, and together with Tom Canning we will make a good pairing. I can’t wait!”
TF Sport also head to the season finale eager to retain the GT4 Drivers’ and Teams’ titles Canning was part of in 2019. Nevertheless, boss Tom Ferrier is looking forward to being back in the senior class, which the team also won last year with Davidson and Jonny Adam.
“It’s great to be running a GT3 in British GT again and I’m excited to see how Giacomo fares against this year’s grid,” he said. “Tom did a superb job in Spa and I have no doubt that together they will be fighting for a podium finish.”
Further race-by-race entries – including several new and returning GT3s – will be announced before the middle of next week.
