Meyrick makes way for Tregurtha at Assetto

Meyrick makes way for Tregurtha at Assetto

> 2017 GT4 champion joins Sansom aboard Bentley GT3

Former GT4 champion Will Tregurtha will make his Intelligent Money British GT3 Championship debut with Assetto Motorsport this season.

The 21-year-old replaces Andy Meyrick whose other racing commitments now prevent him from partnering Mark Sansom, as originally announced. The change also sees Assetto’s Bentley Continental GT3 move from Pro-Am to Silver-Am – the fourth such entry to be confirmed so far.

As well as spending a season in the GT3-based ADAC GT Masters and making regular GT Cup outings, Tregurtha has finished runner-up in the GT4 European Series and DTM Trophy since capturing 2017’s British GT4 crown alongside Stuart Middleton. Their combined age of 35 years and 160 days remains the youngest of any title-winning crew in British GT’s 30-year history.

Tregurtha’s success in Ginettas – he was Junior champion the year before taking HHC Motorsport’s G55 to the GT4 crown – initially brought him to Assetto’s attention. Indeed, regular coaching sessions with the team’s young drivers made him the obvious candidate to step in for Meyrick.

“I always hoped to return to British GT one day but didn’t expect it to happen this season in a Bentley!” he said. “I remember seeing the original announcement and thinking ‘wow, it would be cool to do that’ and now here I am gearing up for my first season in British GT’s senior class. Funny how things work out!

“But despite the late call up I feel 100% ready. I’ve raced at GT3’s top level in GT Masters, have the Pro-Am experience from GT Cup, and proved I have the individual speed by finishing second overall in a very competitive DTM Trophy season last year. I’ve also worked with Mark, so although the car is new to both of us and the team our existing relationship means we’re not starting from square one. Equally, the Bentley is quite similar in proportion and style to the Nissan GT-R I’ve driven extensively.”

Oulton Park hosts the opening round of British GT’s 30th season on April 16 & 18.
