2023: Abba and Nearys return for renewed Silver-Am assault

2023: Abba and Nearys return for renewed Silver-Am assault

The familiar father-son duo of Richard and Sam Neary will contest their fourth Intelligent Money British GT Championship campaign together this year.

Team Abba Racing’s family-run first-gen Mercedes-AMG GT3 is also back for its seventh season after debuting on a race-by-race basis in 2017, while the outfit and Neary Snr made their debuts a year earlier with a BMW Z4 GT3.

Its drivers, who will again have one eye on the Silver-Am title as well as overall success, came agonisingly close to clinching their second British GT wins at Brands Hatch last year. But while their penultimate lap retirement while leading was an undoubted disappointment, it did once again highlight the team’s knack for consistently troubling the factory-supported crews.

No less than seven works drivers are currently confirmed for the upcoming campaign. But Sam Neary is confident Abba can punch above its weight again in 2023.

“We love being the underdogs but are also hungry for silverware, be it in class or overall,” said the 20-year-old. “Last year, for several reasons, a few strong results got away from us. In terms of pace we definitely had the potential to beat Redline to the Silver-Am title, and they were also overall contenders don’t forget. So I don’t see why we can’t consistently trouble the top-six, score podiums and take a win when the opportunity presents itself.

“Richard and I are even more motivated to succeed in British GT this year. You can’t not be when you see the entry list SRO has assembled. Racing against the factory guys around somewhere like Oulton Park is the ultimate barometer.”

Oulton Park hosts the opening round of this year’s Intelligent Money British GT Championship on April 8 & 10.
